A bit about us
Let's tell you more about the people behind Spirit Mortgages.

David Sheppard

I have worked in financial services since the age of 19 starting with high street banking for 9 years and then, after a few years travelling, have been a mortgage broker ever since.

The banking experience was a vital part of my journey as that involved working in a lot of different aspects of the mortgage market including underwriting and it is that skill which can help the most on a daily basis. Having that understanding of what an underwriter is looking for is crucial to a smoother journey. I regularly write memos to go alongside the application for the lenders to assist in their understanding of the case to save them having to work it out with the number of cases they are having to deal with every day.

Despite that banking background, the leap into mortgage broking was a challenge. From only having to know one lender to then dealing with all of them was a steep learning curve. I have been fortunate to work alongside excellent people in that time which has helped me become the broker I am today!

Outside of work, I still like to travel and experience new places and cultures. I enjoy going to the theatre so living in London is fortunate for that. I like watching most sports so was fortunate to be a volunteer at the London Olympics & Paralympics with the highlight of watching wheelchair rugby for the first time.

My financial services career began with Legal and General in 1998 before I decided to focus on the mortgage industry, joining Charcol in 2003 before becoming a mortgage broker for Arun Estates. Experiencing the role within an estate agency environment provided an excellent foundation, which allowed me to take the step into the world I have been working in since 2005. Being able to deal with many lenders is varied but I enjoy the fact that I can try and help as many people as possible.

Customer service within the mortgage industry is usually frustrating and this is where Spirit separates itself from the rest. In life, we experience poor and sometimes dreadful service every day and we want to change our client’s view in this area. It’s not easy but that’s what makes a successful broker.

In my spare time I still enjoy playing football (not too old yet despite appearances) and coaching the local youth team. I also find gardening a great way to unwind and reduce stress levels, which is also helped with a glass of fine wine!
